THE PRINCIPAL of the Cave Hill campus wants a white man to be the next National Hero.
In fact, said pro vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Sir Hilary Beckles, if a nation that has been multiracial from the beginning could not find someone among the white community who fits the criteria of National Hero then “something would have to be fundamentally wrong”.
Sir Hilary was speaking as he suggested that Atholl T.T. Lewis be elevated to the status of National Hero.
The wish of the historian and educator came as his play, dedicated to the life of the member of the Barbadian planter class who lived in the early 20th century and who fought for the rights of the black masses, gets set to debut this month.
