Terry Cox wins bout in Mexico

QUINTANA ROO – Barbadian Shawn-Terry Cox enhanced his impressive ring record with a third-round knock-out of Francisco Alvarez of Puerto Rico in a non-title fight over the weekend.
In front of a packed stadium erected on the Mamita’s Beach Club property, the Barbadian light-heavyweight thrilled the loud Mexican fans with his heavy punching, which helped him to bring early finish to his night’s work.Cox was out-weighed by Alvarez by 35 pounds, but this was little advantage to the Puerto Rican.
“The Sniper”, as he is also known, fought a very intelligent fight using his right jab from a southpaw stance and quick combinations to easily take the first round from Alvarez, who was looking to load up for the big shots.
In the second round, the big shots connected with Cox, and visibly shook the well-built pugilist. He recovered quickly enough, and adhered to instructions from his corner to use his speed and movement, then his power.
Cox executed the plan well in the third round smartly using his boxing skills to set up his power shots that sent Alvarez down for the count in his own corner. Alvarez had beaten Cox in the first round as an amateur at the Central American & Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1998 to win the silver medal.
This time, Cox triumphed to improve his ring record to 14-1. (CMC)
