An appreciative audience turned out at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Complex last Saturday to witness the best of Latin dance at Strictly Latin 2011.
From the evidence of the participation of young dancers, the future of Latin dance seems secured; and it was a joy to see youngsters from ages four and up strutting confidently onto the well-prepared floor to display their expertise in dance expressions such as the samba, jive and paso doble.
With every move, the audience showed their appreciation by hooting, with sustained applause coming from those who comprised many dancers’ fan base.
As the more matured participants glided onto the floor, they exhibited a measure of gladiator-like pride, thereby creating a competitive ambience. Each couple tried to outdo the other, moving across the floor with precise detail.
One of the highlights of Strictly Latin 20011 – which was attended by British High Commissioner Paul Brummell and Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy – was the performance by British Latin and UK Closed Champions Gregor Rebula and Rachael Heron.
They thrilled the upbeat audience with their moves, doing genres like the paso doble, jive and rhumba.
Another highlight was the exciting routine of Glen Burnett and Daana Linton, who copped the Annette Byer Memorial Trophy.
It was truly four hours of dancing well spent.
