Purity Bakeries, one of Barbados’ major bakeries, is carefully considering its costs before taking a position on increasing prices in light of the pending rise in the cost of wheat on Monday.
Christopher Symmonds, sales and distribution manager at Purity Bakeries, said the company was examining the situation to determine its next course of action.
“We have been faced with a number of price increases over a period of time on a wide cross-section of ingredients,” he said. “Right now, we are carefully going through all the numbers and once complete, we will make a determination whether to increase our prices or continue to absorb the increases as we have in the past.”
Symmonds said Purity manufactured many different products and so it was still too early to make a definitive statement on the matter and he would be in a better position to do so later this week.
Efforts to reach officials of other bakeries today proved futile.
Last Friday, ADM Mills confirmed the wheat increase, which will be between 20 and 24 per cent, due to the negative impact on international wheat production by unfavourable weather conditions in Russia,?Canada and Australia which had resulted in poor yields and soaring costs. (CA)
