The photographs in the exhibition Light And Water represent a selection of landscapes, seascapes, flowers, animals and people – leading to a book about the beauty and life in the Caribbean.
Andrea Urlass, the artist from Germany, said her goal was to “capture the magic, atmosphere, beauty and special light in the Caribbean with my camera and touch the hearts of all the people who had never been here”.
Running until July 5 at ArtSplash in Hastings, Christ Church, under the theme River Bay At Dawn, the collection centres around a picture taken by Urlass at River Bay while on a field trip with the Barbados Photographic Society.
It shows the special light you only meet at sunrise, turning the colour of the water into a warm gold. The little rocks in the foreground lead your eye to the rising sun and you see details in the rocks despite the low light.
“I chose it because the light and water represents the theme of the exhibition . . . it is an image you don’t see every day. I also got the best critiques of the Barbados Photographic Society for this image.”
Urlass pointed out pieces that were favourites, like the Pelican, saying it represented “other aspects of the Caribbean: the colours, beautiful sunsets, nature and freedom. I was just fortunate to capture this beautiful pelican right in front of the sunset and this might not happen so often. I love the outstanding colours”.
Judging from the crowd at the opening, it was a well attended exhibition and the Blue Sunset also got much positive feedback, as did Mother And Child. (NSH)
