The council of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) will be meeting this evening and at the top of the agenda will be the issue of possible mass lay-offs in the public service.
This was disclosed yesterday evening by acting president of the union, Akanni McDowall, while responding to questions from the DAILY NATION on yesterday’s Sunday Sun story which reported that as many as 3 000 public officers could be made redundant early in the new year as Government takes steps to control its crippling expenditure.
McDowall said: “We are indeed having discussions with the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Labour and the head of the Civil Service, among others; and also we are having a council meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue.
“As you would appreciate however, this issue is a very delicate and sensitive one because we are dealing with people and their lives and I am therefore going to ask the media to exercise some restraint.”
