Yellow House are the new Hilda Skeene Primary School inter-house cross-country road race champions after dethroning Blue House in both the both and girls’ divisions at the school last Friday.
The event marked the commencement of the school’s inter-house athletic championships. There were several outstanding individual performances as well as Yellow’s collective effort where they dominated and won five out of the six divisions.
Yellow amassed 125 points, 34 clear of their nearest rivals Blue and Green, who are tied for second on 91, and Red, a distant fourth on 64.
In the Infants division, Danielle Rogers of Green House blew away the competition, taking the early lead 100 metres into the race and never relinquishing it to become the new champion. Jenna Greenidge of Yellow was second and Aleena Chapman of Blue third.
In the boys’ section, Milan Trotman became the new champion, improving on his fourth-placing from last year.
Trotman trailed at the midpoint but took the lead ahead of Deshawn Maynard of Yellow into the final turn and held on in a close finish at the line.
Darius Bailey of Red held on for third place as both Rocoyi Thompson (fourth) and Ajani Jones (fifth) of Yellow finished quickly behind him.
Pre-race favourites Shannayah Alleyne of Green and Tiquan Skeete of Red did not disappoint, both winning in the Lower Junior Division.
Alleyne successfully defended her title as she cruised to victory. Destini Maynard and Shonte Seale of Yellow house were second and third respectively.
The boys’ equivalent was not so easy for Skeete, as the spectators were treated to another nail-biting finish which saw Kadari Webster of Green and Skeete in a race to the line.
Skeete was narrowly ahead when they made the final turn but Webster seemed to find another gear. As they began to sprint the final 100 metres they were side by side and could only be separated by the final five metres with Skeete inching ahead to take the title.
Webster’s teammate Keon Gittens took third ahead of a group of Yellow runners, including Jacody Proverbs (fourth), Kende Caddle (fifth), Richad Leonard (seventh) and Kishawn Boyce eighth.
Having not won any of the individual titles as yet, the Yellow House pair of Chelsea Yearwood and Mahkaya Campbell ended the drought in the Senior division. Yearwood copped her second successive title, ahead of Neena Gittens of Green and Dania Haynes of Blue.
However, once again, the Boys’ division came down to the wire to the delight of the crowd.
Defending champion Akobi Antrobus, who had placed third in the recently held Trevor Straughn Memorial Race, emerged off the final turn with Campbell. The two were stride for stride, each giving nothing away.
Within 10 metres left, Campbell continued to dig deep and held his form and was able to finally pull away from Antrobus to become the new upper junior champion. (PR)
