SENATOR VELMA NEWTON saw it coming. And now she wants to see principal Jeff Broomes going.
The former chairman of The Alexandra School told a commission of inquiry yesterday that she was not surprised there was eventual industrial conflict at the St Peter institution, and that Broomes should be removed as principal.
Newton, who is also a former Alexandra student and has also served on the board of another educational body, testified that the attitude of Broomes in his interaction with the board during her one-year tenure was a clear indicator things could eventually go wrong.
“I knew that day was coming. I say that with some sadness. I knew that unless Mr Broomes changed his modus operandi, something was likely to happen,” Newton said in response to a question from commission attorney Michael Yearwood. “I could see destruction down the road,” the Independent senator added.
