TEAM?BARBADOS?finished sixth overall with 417 points after winning 31 medals (11-9-11) at the recent 19th Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships in Savaneta, Aruba.
Trinidad and Tobago topped the medal standings with 26 gold, 26 silver and 22 bronze (74), just ahead of Aruba on 69 (26-22-21), while Suriname were third with 43 (17-12-14). Aruba were first with 890 points and Trinidad second with 877.
On the final day of competition, Sariyah Sherry won gold in the girls’ 13-to-14 100-metre freestyle, breaking
a 28-year championships record. She lowered the time from 1:00.40 to 1:00.08 and also set a new national age group record.
Sherry also won bronze in the 100m backstroke in 1:10.80 and 200m back in 2:33.98 and silver in the 400 freestyle in 4:41.15.
Kimberley Willoughby also won gold in the girls’ 13-to-14 200m individual medley (IM) in 2 minutes, 33.40 seconds. Christian Selby took silver in the boys’ race in 2:19.38.
With medals in seven of her eight individual events and a bronze in the 400m freestyle relay, Sherry was the girls’ age group champion with 53 points.
Hannah Gill won gold in the girls’ 11-to-12 400m free and also set a championship record of 4:40.40, down from 4:42.67. It also erased Zabrina Holder’s age group record of 4:41.42.
Selby also won gold in the 12-to-14 boys’ 400m freestyle in 4:13.37 and Matthew Courtis won his third gold medal with a time of 2:20.09 in the boys’ 15-to-17 200m back. He also won a bronze medal in the 400 free in 4:16.53.
Willoughby took silver in the 13-to-14 girls’ 50m breaststroke in 36.35 seconds and Deandre Small bronze in the girls’ 15-to-17 200m breaststroke in 2:36.81.
The Open Water team of Gabriel Gunby, Eric Taylor and Akeem Nurse tied with the Dominican Republic to win the 14-17 age group title. (SAT)
