A RARE BATTING failure by Barbados player Jafari Toppin has left the Garrison School in danger of conceding first innings lead against last year’s losing finalists, Deighton Griffith on the opening day of their LIME Under-15 semi-final cricket match at Waterford, yesterday.Batting first after winning the toss, Deighton Griffith rallied from 85 for eight to reach a modest 124 with Akeem Harris hitting the top score of 35.But the lads from the Kingsland-based School, struck back by reducing Garrison to 49 for five at stumps with their leading batsman Toppin falling cheaply for six to off-spinner Nicholas Knight.  Toppin had earlier taken four for 31 with his fast-medium bowling while Barbados’ women’s cricketer, Shaquana Quintyne took four for 46 with her leg breaks.Over, at Beckles Road, defending champions Combermere batted the entire first day to score 216 for seven against Nature Valley Lodge.Heavy-set captain Matthew Jones led the way with a solid knock of 78 while Antoine Boyce gave excellent support, scoring 40 as Tarik Shorey, Justin Lucas and Shomari Taylor each grabbed two wickets for Lodge. Both matches end today.
