Pleas and frantic attempts by two members of the Garrison Historic Consortium Inc. came to nought yesterday when a building just outside of the Garrison Historic Area was demolished.
The action has left one of those men, Peter Stevens, disappointed and frustrated as he tried and failed to save the approximately 260 year-old Waterford House, on Hastings Main Road, Christ Church.
“You feel like you’re standing out there with your zipper down and nobody is helping us,” he said, in the wake of the demolition.
“It’s frustrating. If there had been a 100 people out there it wouldn’t have felt so bad. It feels like everybody wants this thing (recognition as a World Heritage Site) but no one wants to stand up for it.”
Stevens told the DAILY NATION he was driving by yesterday when he saw activity and noticed a heavy-duty vehicle parked on the derelict property.
When he stopped and enquired, he was told that the building was to be demolished yesterday.
