THE?LODGE School’s outstanding athletes were toasted at a reception at Coconut Court last week with great praise being paid to their record-setting bronze-medal performance at the Penn Relays in the United States.
The gathering heard how the athletes built on their success at the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships finals to overcome financial uncertainty and unaccustomed cold conditions to bring glory to The Lodge School and Barbados.
The well-wishers included former Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association president Colin Jordan, new president Patricia Affonso Dass, cricketing legends Seymour Nurse and Charlie Griffith, coach Jerston Clarke, Winston Carter of the Barbados Tourism Authority and athlete Sheena Gooding.
Dass acknowledged that internationally Barbados always had a reputation of being a place to produce top sportspersons and the performance from The Lodge School would have reinforced that fact.
Acting principal Vasco Dash, while praising his athletes for winning Barbados’ first team medal at Penn, reminded the audience that The Lodge had brought Barbados’ first Olympic medal through James Wedderburn.
Dash noted that the team’s performance was a continuation of a past tradition and the forging of future dominance. (KB)
