IT MAY be past time for Barbados to start importing technical expertise to improve the state of the throws in local athletics.
Indeed, if a move is not made now to start investing money in the development of that specific area, Barbados may find itself locked out of the medals at the 2013 CARIFTA?Games.
That is the assessment of Charles Walcott, the national record holder in the men’s shot put. Unable to keep silent any longer after Barbados won one silver and two bronze medals in the throws at the 2012 CARIFTA Games in Bermuda earlier this month, he is offering several solutions to the problem.
“I am not criticizing the coaches, but I think the level that we are trying to attain, the coaches are not able to get them to that level. We barely get them to CARIFTA. At CAC [Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships], there is nobody, and don’t look past that, because the level is higher.
So it has a lot to do with the technical support the athletes receive.
