Shonica?Wharton had another fantastic shooting performance to lead Barbados to their fifth straight win at the Caribbean Netball Association’ Jean Pierre Under-16 Netball Competition at the Arnos Vale Courts, St Vincent.
Wharton, who successfully defended her title as the tournament’s top individual shooter after Tuesday’s shooting competitions, scored 34 goals from 39 attempts (87 per cent accuracy) to lead Barbados to a 40-26 victory over archrivals Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday night.
Goal attack Sheniqua Thomas scored six from 15 for Barbados, who led 8-4, 20-11 and 29-21 at the end of the three quarters.
Safiya Fortune led Trinidad with 21 from 27 and Nateisha Radgman scored five from six.
Trinidad and Tobago staged several rallies during the game, especially in the third quarter where they cut the lead to seven (22-15) as Barbados took some time to settle down after some changes.
But it all came together for the Bajans in the fourth and they outscored their opponents 11-6 to consolidate.
Defending champions St Lucia beat hosts St Vincent 29-23 and Grenada were left winless after going down 17-29 to Grenada.
In the shooting, Wharton scored the most goals, 48 goals from 71 attempts to take the individual title for the second straight year.
Fellow Barbadian Shaquilla Davis was second with 47 from 71 ahead of Trinidad’s Fortune, who scored 47 from 59.
Wharton also won the three-minute shooting drill.
Barbados also took the overall team title with 134 goals from 209 attempts, Trinidad and Tobago were second with 134 from 188 and St Lucia third with 120 from 184. (SAT)
