MINISTER OF EDUCATION Ronald Jones has intervened in the dispute between teachers at Alexandra School and principal Jeff Broomes.
In a statement issued yesterday evening, Jones said he had invited the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), which is representing the more than 30 teachers, to a meeting at the ministry today.
His invitation came after Alexandra teachers had been off the job for eight consecutive days. Teachers from more than 15 institutions showed their solidarity by joining them Thursday in a protest march to the offices of Chief Personnel Officer Gail Atkins, where they staged a demonstration. The BSTU is asking for Broomes’ separation from the school.
Jones said he had been taking “keen interest” in the issues relating to the Alexandra School and the BSTU, and was seeking to use the good office of the ministry to see how “we can step back from the brink of disaster in this matter and seek to return to at least a semblance of order in education and in industrial relation matters across the education sector”.
