20 after $200 000

Last year’s Gold Cup winner Gay Smith-owned Zoom headlines a list of 20 horses that have paid the first subscription for the 31st running of the Caribbean’s premier horse race, the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup.
This prestigious event over 1 800 metres is set to run off on March 3 at the Garrison Savannah.
At stake will be a spanking new Gold Cup and prize monies totaling $200 000. The winner will pocket $115 000, while second place will receive $45 000 with $25 000 and $15 000 for third and fourth positions respectively.
The others nominated from Barbados are Show Me The Money, Daga, last year’s United Insurance Barbados Derby winner Kendal Moon, four-time veterans Apostle and John Brian, Mingun Temple, Indanger, Fusaichi Ridge, Giovedi, Lil Man Arran, Graeme Hill, Bipin, Reward Me, Ring Time and Charge It.
Only four horses from abroad have paid up so far. They are the Two Amigos-owned Just Call Me Roger and Joezel, a bay gelding by Johar-Sniffles which is owned by Paul Mouttet.
Both will represent Trinidad and Tobago.
Canada have two representatives: Cavachi – a colt by Fusaichi Pegasus-Houston Time which is owned by Senator Gefforey Cave, Bill Blevins and Sir Martin Arbib – and the Sir David Seale-owned Dancin’ David, a colt by Omega Code-Miss Madeleine.
Former winner Zoom and defending champion Bouncebak are among 17 horses that have paid stage one subscriptions for the 2012 edition of Tanglewood Stakes & Trophy Race.
Derby winners Leave It To Me and Kendal Moon have both been nominated for this 2 000-metre event that offers prize monies totaling $70 000.
The winner will run off with $40 000, while second place gets $15 500, with $8 500 for third and $6 000 for fourth position.
Completing this list are Apostle, Captain Sully, Cinnamon Jane, Dance The Distance, Erados, Heavenly Angel, Island Memories, Istanbul, Reprise, Sail On, Sea Gypsy, Silk N Satin and Surinan.
Speed is the name of the game in the ninth Sandy Lane Spa Sprint over 1 100 metres, which carries a total purse of $40 000.
The fastest to the finish line will collect $23 000. The runner-up will receive $9 000 while the third-placed horse connections will have their account credited by $5 000. Fourth place gets $3 000.
Those nominated for this race are Areyoutalkintome, Bipin, Byhookorcreek, Cavaichi, Erados, Golden Moment, Greely Gone West, Kingdora, Peaceful Envoy, Preach To Me, Purr Class, Rocamadour, Run Alke Run, Rush Cutter and Vitality.
At this stage, no nominations have come in from the powerful Eugene Melnyk barn.
The second subscription is due on January 27 at 4 p.m. and entries close on 21 February at 10 a.m. at the offices of the Barbados Turf Club.
