‘Region fails’ in ranks of transparency

EVEN THOUGH BARBADOS has ranked highly on the Transparency International index, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite is concerned that lower rankings of other countries in the region represented a failure for the region collectively.
Speaking yesterday during a workshop at the Accra Hotel in Rockley, hosted by the British High Commission in Barbados on the laws relating to anti-corruption and strategies for businesses in the Caribbean region to avoid liability under the United Kingdom Bribery Act 2010, Brathwaite made the call for a more focused effort by the CARICOM region on improving.
Brathwaite said that Barbados had enjoyed a high level of transparency and Transparency International has ranked Barbados at number 16 out of 183 countries or territories around the world with a score of 7.8 on its Corruption Perceptions Index 2011.
However, he noted that many Caribbean countries did not rank well and said that if the region failed, Barbados, in spite of its own efforts, had failed as well.  (LK)
