Diamond Corner in St Peter was the venue of a community extravaganza when scores of people descended on Roberts Bar last Saturday night.
The lime even attracted homegrown folks who had been living in the United States for many years. They returned home to be with the “boys” from the area for this grand occasion.
Sure enough, they were more focused on liming with the boys sitting at the side of the road than anything else.
Sylverton and Ikin Jackman, as well as Anthony Johnson, took the opportunity to catch up on the news about their hometown as they relaxed with the boys of the area.
Also with the folks at the roadside and enjoying the almost festive atmosphere on a cool, breezy night was another hometown boy, Jerry Morris, who now lives further north in St Lucy. He was clearly enjoying the company of his wife Denise as the two sat like enduring lovers.
Last Saturday was special for them as they were celebrating 12 years of marriage.
For Jerry, there was no better place to spend his anniversary than in his hometown.
Oslyn Worrell was definitely in a celebratory mood as she danced up a storm on the sidewalk.
She said she was delighted to celebrate Jerry and Denise’s 12th wedding anniversary with them at the lime hosted by her neighbour, shop proprietor Anderson Jordan.
The men folk engaged in quiet conversation on the outside saw the lime as a tribute to their neighbourhood.
Mark “Chalkie” Small, who now lives in Maynards in the same parish, spoke of the village of his birth with great pride.
“I am still a homer,” he declared.
He recounted his days of playing cricket for Diamondshire Sports Club.
As for his friend Levere “Scorpormania” Cumberbatch, who proclaimed his love for having a good time, when asked what he would want to be remembered for, he simply replied: “Good at eating since 1978.”
Cousins Lucinda “Lou Lou” Atkinson and Shone Paul were comfortable sitting on a rock at the roadside. She is a resident of Eagle Hall, St Michael, and he a resident of Weston Heights, St James. They could not claim to be homers but they acted the part as they sat near to the home crowd.
Lou Lou let it be known that she was an avid entertainment fan and listed the activities she patronized: karaoke sessions, Q In The Community, VOB Magical Extravaganza and other shop limes.
“Life is too short,” she said.
The bar was crowded with dancers and patrons coming and going. Behind the counter Jordan, with the assistance of family members including children Shanice and Troy, kept patrons well supplied.
His wife Sybil was the one in charge of preparing the fried fish, chicken and other goodies, ably assisted by the cheerful Annette Gibson.
Diamond Corner truly reflected the spirit of a community in love with its traditions and people.
