IMAGINE HAVING TO WAIT 20 years to meet someone who saved your life!
That wait ended yesterday when Barbadian Kerwin Delpeche, who almost drowned at Sandy Beach in 1993, finally met retired British Captain John Briand.
It was around 5 p.m. on April 7 when Delpeche got into severe difficulty after he and a group of friends had swum out to a small yacht. Amid the strong currents, the teenager found himself struggling to hold onto the boat but was swept off.
By the time his friend Michael McCollin, a strong swimmer, managed to drag him ashore, the then 15-year-old Delpeche was unconscious.
“I tried my best but Kerwin was always stocky,” McCollin recalled. “So by the time I got him to the shore, I was frantic because Kerwin was now unconscious and frothing . . ..
