For nearly two hours today, members of the RSPCA and a concerned passer-by fought valiantly to save the life of a trapped horse.
But their efforts came to naught when the critically injured, woefully thin but bloated animal had to be humanely euthanized.
It was a saga that began on Wednesday morning when officials from the Barbados Fire Service made an urgent call, for assistance, to the RSPCA about a horse that was trapped in a canal by the Globe roundabout.
It took the combined efforts of fire officers and RSPCA vet Dr William Huey, vet assistant Naresh Belgrave and inspector Wayne Norville, along with C.O. Williams earth mover driver Rickie Alleyne and personnel from Backhoe Rentals and Online Trucking, to rescue it.
They left the horse sedated, but with a fighting chance of survival.
So it was a much surprised Norville, who responded to calls yesterday and saw the horse, its head lolling in the filthy water, now trapped in the main canal. (HLE)
