Junior surfers have the backing of one of the island’s car dealerships as they begin their quest to boost the country’s rating on the international surfing scene.
Courtesy Nissan has come on board, not only with a cash injection, but providing the team with gear as well.
President of the Barbados Surfing Association Simon Coles, accepted the sponsorship cheque from Nicholas Mackie of Courtesy Garage at the Barbados Olympic Association’s headquarters.
Coles, who noted that sponsorship for the team had been extremely hard to source, said they were very grateful to Courtesy.
Stepped up “Nicholas Mackie and Courtesy are half the reason we are going to Peru. They have stepped up,” said Coles.
The International Surfing Association’s World Junior Surfing Championships are scheduled to be held in Peru from May 21 to 29 and eight of the island’s best junior surfers have been selected on the team.
Coles feels the team has a “very good chance” of making the Top 20 or even breaking into the Top 15.
“The kids have to acclimatise to the conditions and surfing in wet suits and they have to familiarise themselves with the break,” he said.
“But we can get a berth in the Top 15. That is a realistic expectation but the cold will be a definite factor,” the BSA president said.
Meanwhile, the next event on the BSA’s calendar is the schools championships which surfs off at the Drill Hall, Beach on Saturday.
