Minister of the?Environment Dr Denis Lowe, who has been struggling with his health recently, yesterday presented the House of Assembly with what might have been the local equivalent of Mark Twain’s famous and enduring quip: “Reports of my demise are grossly exaggerated!”.
Lowe was reported to have been detained at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital a few weeks ago for the second time in as many years after he had been rushed there in 2011 in what was said to be a “serious condition”.
On September 11, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart disclosed that Lowe had had “a slight misfortune”, but insisted that it was “not something so critical as to turn the country upside down”.
Lowe returned, with other parliamentary colleagues in the Barbados Labour Party, to the House on Tuesday after its summer recess looking fit, and according to Press reports was smiling broadly and walking briskly as he entered the Chamber, remarking to waiting reporters who enquired about his health: “I’m feeling fine, thank you.”
The Christ Church East MP, before joining the debate on the Cultural Industries Development Bill 2013 yesterday, expressed his “gratitude and indebtedness” to God for His love, enduring strength and mercy and for His control over the destiny of man. (AB)
