FISHERMEN?are concerned about the state of the damaged jetty at Oistins as the start of the fishing season nears.
One of the concrete slabs broke off the 300-foot-long jetty last November, falling into the sea, while there are visible cracks throughout the structure, which is critical to operations at the fish market.
Government sources say the repair bill will run into thousands of dollars, which are not available right now.
Fishermen fear that the longer it takes to repair the jetty, the worse it may get and become unusable like the Speightstown jetty, which was damaged two years ago but has not been repaired as yet.
As a result of the Oistins damage, a metal slab and caution tape were placed across the section where the slab broke off. While the jetty remains in restricted use, forklift drivers have refused to drive across it to bring in fish from the boats.
That has resulted in fishermen being forced to load their huge containers of fish onto a pallet jack and manually pull it across the jetty.
