Call for lifeguards to have power of arrest

The National Conservation Commission (NCC) has called for legislation to give lifeguards powers of arrest to deal with pranksters.
According to NCC general manager Keith Neblett, lifeguards continuously encountered problems with beach users, particularly with bathers who pretended to be in difficulty in the water and called out for help and also with people who were under the influence of alcohol.
He said that Trinidad just adopted a law on arrests and Barbados “will look at their legislation and see if it is something that can easily be implemented here”.
Neblett spoke to the media earlier today at Browne’s Beach, Bay Street, where the NCC’s Operation Save Our Selves (SOS) annual summer programme was launched.
