Port bonus

AS MANY AS 21 WORKERS at the Barbados Port Inc. (BPI) are to be paid an unexpected bonus this month, though they did not have to work to earn it.
By month-end the workers will share in a payout of $22 194 from the BPI because it allowed a private company to load items for export in the port without informing the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) or using workers it represents.
The DAILY NATION understands that the payout by BPI was part of their compromise with the powerful BWU to avoid industrial action over the matter.
Investigations by this newspaper revealed that the BPI leased a portion of land at the Flour Mill site to a subsidiary of Preconco Limited to store 60-feet concrete piles for export to Trinidad.
