PROGRESSIVE’S dreams of a volleyball double continue to transform into a nightmare.
The 2010 Knockout kings lost their second league game in straight sets, going down to losing Knockout finalists Chargers 22-25, 24-26, 20-25, at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, on Tuesday night.
With key man Renier Grace out with a knee problem, Progressive struggled against the more consistent Chargers in a game in which the players spent an unusual amount of time contesting calls made by the officials. Although Fabian Cox and Akeem Payne made some telling shots for Progressive, they were not enough to hold off Chargers.
Chargers could not afford another loss, having stumbled against Sunpower Foundation United, and Dale Addison ensured that Damien Danzell, Gregory Burke and Dwayne Howell maintained the offensive to stay in the hunt for the Division 1 crown.
Earlier, defending kings RBTT Deacons cantered to a simple 25-22, 25-20, 25-13 win over Friendly Hall.
Foundation were made to fight before putting down the BNB Juniors 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14.
In an encounter between the two Deacons slayers, Cawmere and O-Aces put on a fine display of attack and counter-attack before Cawmere took the match 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 30-28.
O-Aces should have carried the match to five sets after leading 18-11 in the fourth set against a team missing Shawn Simpson.
However, Cawmere scored seven unanswered points to lock the scores at 18, and setter Rory Goddard reminded opponents and fans of the spiking prowess of Fabian Bartlett, Richard Forde, Raffael Lovell and Gavin Brewster. (KB)
