A?HUGE?section of the road at Dark Hole, St Joseph, broke away on Sunday night, forcing transport authorities to block off vehicular access.
Residents said the road was slowly giving way after the passage of Tropical Storm Tomas but on Sunday night it broke off, slipping into a gully – trees and all.
Officials at the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) said the integrity of the road was compromised because of the rupture of an underground water main. Workers from the Barbados Water Authority worked through Sunday night into yesterday repairing the main and restoring water to some householders.
Engineers were also on the scene examining the extensive breakage.
Public relations officer at MTW, Avonda Scott, said there was no indication as yet as to how soon the road would be repaired. (MB)
