ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Prime Minister Tillman Thomas will travel to hurricane-hit neighbours, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, this week following a decision to help the Eastern Caribbean countries recover from the effects of Hurricane Tomas.
Prime Minister Thomas and his ministers met in emergency session on Friday and a Cabinet subcommittee was set up to coordinate Grenada’s assistance to the two countries.
“If any country is to show lead in these circumstances, it’s Grenada, given our experiences and the support we received after hit by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004 and 2005,’’ said chairman of the Cabinet subcommittee and Junior Information Minister, Senator Arley Gill.
Thomas had initially planned to make a one-day visit to both countries on Saturday but postponed it in order to attend a fundraising event of the ruling National Democratic Congress that evening.
A government statement said the Grenadian leader would be accompanied on his trip by Senator Gill, Health Minister Senator Ann Peters and Chief Technical officer in the Ministry of Works, Cecil Harris.
Both St. Lucia and St. Vincent suffered millions of dollars in economic and infrastructural losses when Hurricane Tomas stormed the islands last weekend. There were no reported deaths in St. Vincent, but at least 14 people are feared dead in St. Lucia.
