PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands –Voters in this British Overseas Territory will go to the polls on Friday to elect a new government, three years after London resumed daily administration of Turks& Caicos Islands (TCI), disbanded the locally elected government and suspended the legislature.
The move by London came after a one-man Commission of Inquiry said it found widespread corruption under the administration of former premier Michael Misick.
Electoral officials confirmed that 37 candidates had been officially nominated to contest the elections with the Progressive National Party (PNP), the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) each nominating 15 candidates, while the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will be represented by five candidates. There are two independents in the race to control the 21 member Legislative Council for a four year term.
Supervisor of Elections, Dudley Lewis said the preliminary list puts the total of verified registered voters at 6,884, with an additional 455 cases pending due to insufficient supporting materials by the applicants. (CMC)
