THE BARBADOS UNION of Teachers (BUT) has given a failing grade to one country school and is keeping a close eye on another.
When the doors open at schools for the start of the school term on Monday, students at Society Primary in St John look set to be working from a new location as the school has been deemed unfit for teaching and learning.
“The ministry will have to make the statement as to whether school would be at Society Primary or not . . . . But I am sure that school cannot happen there,” union president Pedro Shepherd said.
Speaking to the SATURDAY SUN yesterday morning, he said the main issue seemed to be moisture as a result of water seepage.
“You have fungus growing on the walls. You have other growth, what we in Barbados call duppy parasol. We also noticed
at Society that the staircase – which would take [you] to the main building, upstairs to the principal’s office [and] Class 3s and 4s – is shaking and teachers who are on site indicated to us that they are extremely scared when the children are going up those stairs,” Shepherd said.
