Out of victim’s hands

Attorney?General?Adriel Brathwaite says that legislation is coming soon to send perpetrators of domestic violence to prison even if the victims refuse to pursue charges.
Delivering the Democratic Labour Party (DLP’s) weekly lunchtime lecture yesterday, Brathwaite said that once the charge had been brought and officers had clear evidence the victim had been assaulted, the case could be pursued in a court of law, even if the victim withdrew the complaint.
“Quite often, the victims we are trying to protect come and say that they are not giving evidence, but the direction we are going in is that we are going to take that power from their hands.
“We are going to make it easier for the police to acquire protection orders and we are going to ensure that charges can be brought against the perpetrator, whether or not the victim changes his or her mind,” he said.
