SEVEN OF THE NINE Central Bank of Barbados workers who threatened to sue the institution for failing to promote them as agreed have now moved up the ladder.   The promotions, made effective from January 1, were communicated to the seven in correspondence from the bank’s director of human resources at the end of last month.    They had threatened legal action against Governor DeLisle Worrell, accusing him of reneging on promises made last April.   After being informed orally of their promotions, the workers had later received a letter from the governor regretting that the raises were not coming through and noting it had been the fault of management that the promises were not carried out.   Worrell had also indicated to the employees attached to the bank’s supervision department that “it was determined that it might not have been in the best interest of the organisation as a whole to confirm those appointments at this time.”   Attorney-at-law Ralph Thorne, QC, who had taken the matter to the high court on behalf of one of the employees, said he was happy the bank had come to an agreement on the promotions.   “My client’s sole decision to challenge his current employer in court was a rare display of courage which I believe enured also to the benefit of his colleagues.   “It is always reassuring when a client expresses faith in a legal system that promises to safeguard even the rights of the powerless against the might of the powerful,” Thorne said.
