Draws leave second place up for grabs

A RARE GOAL by Renaldo “Piou” Gilkes on the stroke of full time earned dethroned champions, Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame a hard-fought 1-1 draw with ICE Wales when the 2011 Digicel Premier League football action continued at the National Stadium on Thursday night. Gilkes’ 90th-minute left-foot shot just before the final whistle, was only his third goal at this level and first since 2004 but was a welcome one for the Dames. After a partial clearance from the Wales’ defence, Gilkes, a defensive midfielder slotted his effort into the far corner, past goalkeeper Greg Jones. It cancelled out an early sixth minute strike by former national striker Dwayne Stanford. It was Stanford’s seventh goal of the Premiership but he also missed a second goal, when he slipped between Bryan Neblett and Leon Todd and Dames’ tall goalkeeper Kareem Farrell hauled down his attempted lob. The result left the battle for the $10 000 second prize still wide open as the Dames and Wales both have 30 points with one match remaining. Mackeson Brittons Hill, who are fourth on 28 points, can now clinch second position once they win their final two games. In the second match of the double header, newly crowned champions, Meridian Youth Milan, who rested a number of their usual starters, and lowly Bagatelle, who finished the game with 10 men after Rohan Weekes was redcarded, battled to a goalless draw. The one point gained from the draw took Bagatelle to 18 points, five ahead of St John Sonnets, who need to win their last two matches and hope that Bagatelle lose their final encounter to avoid relegation.
