St Leonard’s’ bright idea

STUDENTS?of St Leonard’s Boys Secondary School continue to impress with innovative and creative projects.
The school’s solar-powered food dryer, which was on display at the recent Barbados Manufacturers Exhibition (BMEX), was so impressive that the media resources department of the Ministry of Education presented the school with several prizes yesterday.
Gale Gooding, media resource officer, said the department normally presented prizes to schools that were innovative and creative in their projects.
“We found that for the past two years the school was really innovative in their projects and creations, so we presented a multimedia projector for the home economics and industrial department as a source of encouragement for them,” she said.
Two special prizes were also given to Stephan Squires and Jovaughn Warren who built the solar-powered food dryer.
“Their topic, Going Green, is something we need to embrace today and we are really hoping that as they go forward with their plans for a solar kitchen. We are actually looking forward to having it displayed at BMEX next year,” said Gooding.
The school has embarked on a Green Footprints project, and principal Joseph King said: “These are the type of projects that we need to be looking at because I believe that we need to leave that green footprint on our environment and reduce the need for fossil fuel.”
The concept of the solar-powered food dryer, which was designed especially for this year’s BMEX, is expected to undergo some minor modifications and be converted into a clothes dryer. (LK)
