DEAR CHRISTINE – Evicted after 40 years and nowhere to go

Dear Christine,
A pleasant good morning to you.
I am just a concerned friend trying to help in any way possible. I don’t know whom I should speak to, so I am praying that someone reading this column will reach out.
I have some friends who are having trouble finding somewhere to live. After they have been living on a particular spot of land for almost 40 years, the owner has decided she wants it back. As a result, they have to look for somewhere to go as their families’ houses cannot accommodate all nine of them.
I pray that this information could be given to persons who can do something about their situation. They have until next month to move, and have little money in these hard economic timesto even afford land at these high prices.
I look forward to hearing from you and I pray God’s blessings upon you as you are doing a good job.
– Faith

Dear Faith,
You have not supplied enough information for us to personally look into your situation. That aside, I understand your concerns for your friends.
What I can tell you is this: if your friends and four other individuals have been occupying four separate spots on that person’s land for all those years, it could constitute a tenantry, under the Tenantries Freehold Purchase Act.
Based on this, the landowner may be obligated to sell you the spot at ten cents a square foot. You or your friend should seek further advice from an attorney-at-law.
I sincerely hope that you will be led in the right direction.
–?CHRISTINE
