After being under construction on the beach near the old fish market in Bay Street for more than five years, the large schooner SV Ruth is almost ready to take to the water.
Project manager for the Blue Star Navigation Company, Ian Dash, said yesterday it would soon be time to launch.
“We have two more masts to put up but hopefully we will be able to participate in the Errol Barrow Day [January 21] around-the-island race next year,” he said.
Racing is not the primary function of the schooner, however. It is in fact a cargo vessel and Dash said the idea was to replicate the commercial runs of the cargo ships of old. (CA)
