Don’t like how he treats my mother

Dear Christine,
My stepfather treats my mother badly and has been running around [with various women] for all the years that they were married (about 39, to be exact).
He feels he is young and everything he sees, he wants. She is a pensioner and has had to return to the workforce in order to maintain herself. He is so mean that he washes and cooks for himself.
She wanted a washing machine and had to get it on her own. He was the first to wash his clothes in the machine. The house is also badly in need of repairs [but nothing is being done to it].
[All he does] is look at every bus stop for women to give them a ride, and then ends up having affairs with them. They laugh at him because he is impotent. What can a 69-year-old man be thinking?
My mother has six of us but we are all grown. She doesn’t say much to him but she told me one day she had to tell him to change his clothes because of his odour.
We all love our mother, but this man will pay. She has hypertension because of his dirty way of living.
Thank you and please tell me what you think.
– WORRIED STEPDAUGHTER

Dear Worried Stepdaughter,
I can obviously see that you are concerned about the situation in which your mum finds herself and your concern has resulted in this letter.
I believe that when your mum got married to your stepfather she agreed to live with him for better or for worse, and if for the past 39 years she has lived with her husband, it tells me that she has put up with this kind of lifestyle for a long time.
However, if you are so concerned about her, would you be willing to take her in if she wants to get out of her present environment? Is your love for her so strong that you can convince her to leave her husband and move in with you – or any of your siblings, for that matter?
You seem to think she deserves better treatment and should be in a more loving environment. If she ever expresses that she wants to get away from it all, you should reach out to help if you can.
On the other hand, if she is content to keep on living with this man despite all he has done and keeps on doing, there is nothing you or I can do to change her mind.
In other words, the ball is in her court.
– CHRISTINE
