Donald Leacock, who followed up his third placing in the Caribbean Open Junior Golf Championships in Trinidad with a similar placing in the Sir Garfield Sobers Festival, is aiming to make the Barbados Hoerman Cup team.
The 17 year-old Leacock, who has been a leading junior national player for the past four years, will be moving out of that category this year and has ambitions of representing Barbados at the Caribbean Championships in August in the United States Virgin Islands.
“My form is fairly good at the moment and I am looking forward to the trials. I want to make the Hoerman Cup team,” he said.
The Barbados Golf Association has announced trials for June 1 and 2 at Royal Westmoreland and June 8 and 9 at the Barbados Golf Club. Fourteen players, male and female, will be selected for the Caribbean Championships in St Thomas.
At the recently concluded Sir Garry Sobers Festival, the Harrison College student finished third in the championship flight division, behind champion James Johnson (score of 282) and Julian Jordan (310), over 72 holes.
At the St Andrew’s course in Trinidad in early April, Leacock, Xavier Wiggins and Tammi-Ann Grant represented Barbados during the Republic Bank Caribbean Junior Open Golf Championships.
Leacock (score of 247) was third in the boys’ 16-17 division which was won by Trinidadian Denesh Jackree (224). Wiggins and Grant performed creditably but failed to reach podium positions,
Christina Ferreira (239) successfully defended the girls’ title, leading throughout the tournament.
Liam Bryden (235) was the 14-15 boys champion, while Sam Avey claimed the 11-13 boys’ title. (BB)
