Two long jump records were broken and athletes warmed up for next year at the recently held BC Trac Twilite Meet at the National Stadium.
In the Under-13 boys’ long jump, Shem Forde of the High Performance Centre (HPC) shattered the existing mark of 4.77 metres set by Todd Lavine two years ago with a leap of 5.42 metres. In a sweep, clubmates Ajani Alleyne (4.46) and Shane Alleyne (4.45) were second and third, respectively.
Forde also won the 700m, 50m and 150m.
Princess Margaret’s Sherika Squires now holds the women’s open record of 4.13 metres, adding six centimetres to the mark set by Rhea Howard in 2005, while Kevin Jones of Elite Distance was ten centimetres shy of the record when he won the men’s event with 6.39m.
Other long jump winners were Simone Carrol (4.06m) of Cuthbert Moore in the Under-13 girls’ event and Ramar Henry (5.42m) of Elite Distance in the Under-15 boys’ leap. Ashley Vaughan of BC Trac won the women’s shot put with 7.31 metres.
All track events were hand-timed and although there were some very fast times recorded, hand times can’t be used to replace the electronic records which were set in previous years.
Pacers’ Nicholas Deshong’s won the men’s 300m in 33.7 seconds, followed by Nicholas Gill (34.1) of Rising Stars and Jamil Jones in 34.3.
Rising Stars swept the men’s 150m with Elroy Agard (15.4), Marv Gamble (15.6) and former Wibisco Stars’ product Shekeim Greaves (15.9) taking the top spots. Greaves won the 50m in 5.5 seconds, followed by Jones (5.7) and Gamble (5.8), who had the same time as Pacers’ Renaldo Bailey.
Twelve-year-old Tristan Evelyn of Rising Stars stopped the clock at 17.1 seconds to win the Under-15 girls’ 150m, a full second (18.7) faster than BC Trac’s Chelsi Corbin; and also won the women’s 50m dash in 6.4 seconds ahead of Jaleesia Harper (6.5) and St James’ Christaline Chandler who was timed at 6.7 seconds.
The boys’ Under-15 division is shaping up to be a very competitive one this year. Mario Burke, now competing for HPC, won the 150 in 17 seconds flat, followed by Blitz’s Tamal Atwell (17.3) and Rising Stars’ Tré Adamson in 17.4 seconds.
Christian Rock of Rising Stars took the 1000m in 2.41.5, ahead of Run Barbados 3K champion Shammar Maynard of Princess Margaret and teammate Antoine Williams, who were clocked at 2:53.6 and 2:56.5, respectively.
Tramaine Maloney won the 200m hurdles in 23.7 seconds from the Pacers duo of Shamar Greenidge (24.1) and Keon Joseph (24.7).
BC Trac’s Jalisa Burrowes won the women’s 300m in 41.9 seconds.
The little ones were also in action. Jalena Coulthurst of Cuthbert Moore and Rosette Hoyte of Rising Stars were both clocked at 7.2 seconds in the Under-11 girls’ 50m dash and Rising Stars’ Ajani Haddock the boys’ race in the same time. Hasani Lowe (20.9) of BC Trac and Hoyte (20.7) won the 150m dash in Under-11 division.
Pius Emilien of Elite Distance won the Under-15 boys’ 700m in 1:49.8 and Corbin the girls’ race in 2:13.1.
The 2010/2011 track season is scheduled to resume on January 7 at 10 a.m. at the National Stadium.
