Eight-year-old Zane Maloney is the new champion driver of the Barbados Karting Association’s (BKA) Frutee Championship.
He put the title beyond the reach of all comers by making a clean sweep on SDRR Hydraulics-sponsored race day No. 10  to score 100 points and a final tally of 841.
“It was grit and determination. All Zane wanted to do is drive. He was not bothered by the small numbers entered for the final day’s action, and he said, ‘Daddy, I want to drive’,” his father and technical specialist Sean Maloney explained.
The young driver, who also won the Easy Kart 60cc Class, had been locked in a tense battle in the class with girl driver Megan Gilkes who had been leading the group as well as the overall championship.
However, she suffered a broken arm at the World Finals in Milan last month and was sidelined.
Last year’s champion driver, Christian Hinds, who had battled with mechanical problems all day, was still good enough to grab second place overall with 797.5 points.
He took the title for the Yamaha 310-lb class ahead of Tremaine Forde-Catwell who scored 679 points. Gilkes finished third overall with 714.
Aiden Fortier who finished with 613 points and Noah White (250), finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Easy Kart 60 cc Category.
Josh Maloney, with 682 points, outfoxed the promising Saviola Thomas (673), to snatch the 270-lb Class title, while Javani Smith, who had been looking good early in second place, had to settle for third with 555.
Josh Parris, who missed most of the first season, ended with 298 points in fourth spot.
Two other drivers, Raphael Russell and Luke St John, ended the season with 299 and 41 points, respectively.
