THE GOLD?HEARTS?CAMPAIGN is back, and this year the public is being asked to “bear your heart on your sleeve”.
Two local celebrities will be donating their time to assist in the sale of hearts at Cave Shepherd in Bridgetown this week.
On Monday – Valentine’s Day – newly appointed Member of Parliament for St John, Mara Thompson, will sell hearts at Cave Shepherd, while Member of Parliament and former Opposition Leader Mia Mottley sold hearts yesterday. Both are long-time supporters of the Variety Club, the children’s charity of Barbados, and Thompson is also the patron of this year’s campaign.
The annual campaign raises funds for the mentally or physically challenged and less fortunate children in Barbados.
Gold hearts bearing the image of the children’s television character Yogi Bear are on sale and will be available until Gold Heart Day, February 14.
One of the programmes that will benefit from the campaign is the Mobility Programme, which assists with supplying wheelchairs, prosthetics, orthotics, specially adjusted bicycles, and other mobility devices to children all over the world who have mobility difficulties.
Amanda McKay, chief barker/president, explained that last year’s drive collected almost $140 000, of which $10 000 was donated to Haiti. (LK)
