HUNDREDS OF NEW STUDENTS at Ross University School of Medicine received their signature white coats last Friday, taking them one step closer to their dreams.

The White Coat Ceremony acts as a rite of passage for new medical students and is a tradition during which they receive their first white lab coats, the garment worn by doctors of medicine. Their cloaking reflects the students’ commitment to the values and professional expectations of a physician.

During the event at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, where Ross University is located, the first-year students received many well wishes and advice before going up to receive their coats while beaming with pride.

Rhonda McIntyre, associate dean of medical sciences, told them: “Some of you have overcome health challenges, others economic hardship. For some, English as a second language created barriers to being successful on your exams, and some of you have faced rejection on more than one academic cycle in medical school and have had to retake exams. Whatever your circumstances that you had to go through, you are here and we saw something in you that allowed us to have the confidence that you have the potential to succeed.”
