NOT EVEN THE PRESENCE OF police officers could stop Set D (Green) from trouncing the opposition when Deighton Griffith held their annual sports on the school’s grounds in Kingsland on Friday.
Long before the final events had been finished, Set D had completed the takeover, leaving two-time defending champions, Set C (Yellow) and Set B (Blue) fighting for second and third placed honours.
In fact, were it not for a below par performance in the relays, their margin of victory would have been much bigger.
But their 1 069 points were still more than enough to guarantee them the title, while Set B stormed past Set C to finish in second position with 894 points, leaving the defending champions to settle for third (815 points).
Set A (Red) were a distant fourth on 633 points.
And while Red might have finished last, they still managed to produce the top male athlete, with Daniel Absalom collecting 88 points on his way to being crowned victor ludorum.
Absalom was simply unbeatable on the track, winning the Under-20 boys’ 100 metres (12.67), 200m (25.45), 400m (55.76), 800m, 1500m, long jump and shot put. He also placed sixth in the high jump and eighth in the discus.
While Absalom was head and shoulders above the rest of the male athletes. Under-15 division champion Andre Callender was his main rival for the victor ludorum title with 45 points.
Callender was outstanding in the field events though, winning the high jump, long jump, discus and javelin.
Set B’s Shonte Broomes was the queen of the meet, capturing the victrix ludorum title, thanks to her 69-point effort. She managed to pip Under-15 champion Tia Inniss for the title.
Broomes, a first former, won the 200m (32.32), 400m (1:14.34), 1500, high jump and long jump, while placing second in 100m (15.57), where she was edged on the line by Set B’s Allysha Daniel, who finished in a time of 15.53 seconds.
Inniss of Set D won all of her events, those being the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and the 1500m, on her way to racking up 60 points.
Inniss was Set D’s lone divisional champion, with Set C winning the lion’s share of individual awards.
Set C boasted four champions in Callender (Under-15 boys), Kentoine Browne (Under-17 boys), the Under-17 girls’ Miracle-Ann King and Danielle Currency, the Under-20 girls champion.
