The caddies of the Sandy Lane Golf Club got an opportunity to show off their golfing skills on the greens when the annual Sandy Lane Caddy Tournament was held recently at the Country Club.Taking this year’s overall gross winner was Carlston Leacock, who was presented with a dazzling crystal trophy for his gross score of 73. His trophy was in honour of a former Sandy Lane caddy, the late Goslin Griffith. The overall net winner, Winston Blenman, had a net score of 68 and was presented with a trophy in honour of the late John Payne, an Englishman and former member of the Sandy Lane Golf Club.General manager of Sandy Lane, Robert Logan and Golf and Country Club manager, Elvis Medford, took the opportunity to say “thank you”, on behalf of Sandy Lane and its owners.“The caddies’ contribution is very important to the standards embedded in the Sandy Lane experience. That’s why on the day of the Caddy Tournament, we close the Country Club course to honour them and their guests,” he said. Logan added that the caddies contribute to the exceptional level of service of the Hotel and Country Club and announced that next year’s event would be bigger and better.Other winners on the day were Roger Bostic and Robert Piggott who placed second and third respectively in the 0-12 gross category; and Randolph Henry and Elvis Sandiford, who were second and third respectively in the 0-12 net category. Lloyd Jemmott, Shawn Waldron and Desmond Layne placed first, second and third respectively in the 13 and Over Gross Category; while Richard Greenidge, Winston Clarke and Rawle Stoute took the top three places in the 13 and Over net category.Logan, along with National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers and chairman of the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA), David Rice, presented the winners with their prizes.Sandy Lane, the only local facility which provides a caddy service, has a full complement of 110 caddies.
