The rising level of unemployment in Barbados has made it to the discussion table of Barbados’ Social Partnership.
This, from Central Bank Governor Dr DeLisle Worrell, who said also that he was banking on an improved tourism performance this year to help stem some of those job losses currently taking place in the island.
And as the country’s unemployment figures rise with every quarter, standing now at 12.5 per cent, Worrell said the situation strengthened the need for a strong Social Partnership.
“All the partners at the table understand the fundamentals that we are facing . . . . Within the Social Partnership, the businesses that are doing relatively well and the Government can find strategies to minimize that impact.
“That is one of the ways we have adjusted to the difficulties that we face,” he told the media yesterday following release of the bank’s 2011 economic performance.
