After being bone dry and hit by fears of a spreading drought, Barbados has been getting more than a fair share of rain in the last few days.
Flash flooding was reported in parts of St James, St Peter, St Lucy and St Thomas on Christmas Day, Saturday.
The torrential rains flooded roads and created problems for many motorists, as seen in this Lennox Devonish photo, taken in Sion Hill, St James.
However, this year’s rainfall, measuring 1 892 millimetres Sunday, should spell good news for both agriculture and the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), which had been worried about low levels in the reservoirs.
Last March, the BWA?said the increasingly dry conditions in the country had prompted it to activate its Drought Management Plan. The authority encouraged customers to practise “good water use habits” and employ voluntary conservation measures.
These measures included abandoning the use of hoses for non-essential activities such as irrigating ornamental plants and washing vehicles. The BWA said voluntary conservation, if practised islandwide, should go a long way towards avoiding undue dislocations and water outages, should conditions deteriorate further. (TY)
