BCA wants millions owed

PRESIDENT of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Conde Riley says the association is hoping to recover the millions owed to it, which will assist with the reconfiguring and completion of the indoor facility at Kensington Oval for the New Year.

“Critically, the BCA is owed almost $20 million from various entities and we need to address this situation, which has caused our auditors to be concerned about our ability to collect these substantial funds. Although we receive funds from the National Lottery, we need to have meaningful discussions with our debtors with regard to how they will settle these outstanding debts. We believe in maintenance, so we wouldn’t want it to come to a point where we have to spend millions to get it back to the original pristine condition,” he said.

“We need to adjust the finances so that we can help in keeping it in that kind of condition [therefore] we really have to address the debt that is owed to us from the various entities. That was a subject of a qualified opinion for the past few years by our auditors PriceWaterhouseCoopers as reflected in our financial statements.”

Riley was speaking to MIDWEEK SPORT as the curtain came down on 2018, while highlighting a number of plans for the BCA, with the approval by his board of the four-year Development Plan 2019 to 2023.

The BCA head indicated that the completion of the indoor facility was an important undertaking since it could play a major role in Barbados’ sports-tourism thrust. (RG)
