Close to 1 000 students had to abandon classes just after lunch today at Queen’s College secondary school at Husbands, St. James, when a swarm of over 25 000 bees threatened the safety of the students and staff.
Principal Dr David Brown quickly cancelled the remainder of school when it was realized that the bees, some of which had been noticed from the previous day, were swarming and massing particularly around the two storey science lab.
Within an hour bee specialist Rudy Gibson and his crew arrived at the school to deal with the situation.
Gibson said that it was normal around May in Barbados for bees to be swarming as with the oncoming hurricane season, bees would be leaving gullies and low lying areas to find high ground.
