Falcons sent an early warning that they will be the team to beat with two comfortable victories when the Barbados Netball Association’s pre-season Fast5 tournament started at the Netball Stadium on Friday night.
After a late start, the fair-sized crowd – like the players, umpires and officials – took awhile to get into the action.
In the opening match, Falcons, consisting of mainly Division 1 netballers as well as players from the University of the West Indies, Pine Hill St Barnabas and Pride of Villa, defeated Bathsheba 34-13 after leading 10-4 at half time.
Goal shoot Latonia Blackman was almost perfect, missing one shot on her way to 16 points while her sister Nadia Blackman missed two attempts in earning nine points and Damisha Croney added 10 points after missing seven shots.
For Bathsheba, goal shoots Philliasah Holder had four points and Janelle Bovell one while goal attack Alison Farley earned eight points.
Spooners Hill then defeated Newbury 25-15 in a match where they held slim quarter leads of 6-4 and 11-8 before pulling away at the end of the third quarter, 19-12.
St Barnabas, made up of several past nationals including Julie Phillips, Denise Alleyne, Marvalene Neblett and Jacqueline Browne, defeated the Royal Barbados Police Force 19-9.
In the night cap game, Falcons were back on court and they flew away from Northerners 59-4, after stopping the girls from the north from scoring in the first two quarters to lead 19-0 at half time with their tall goalkeeper Faye Sealy and goal defence Teresa Howell giving away very little in defence.
