CHRIST CHURCH GIRLS and Milton Lynch Primary (formerly Christ Church Boys’) decimated 46 other schools to capture the annual Inspire Sports Trevor Straughn Cross Country titles under less than ideal conditions at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, yesterday.
With several schools being affected by Tropical Storm Tomas and not taking part, and with a heavy and lengthy shower delaying and threatening the races for almost an hour, the young runners displayed great grit and determination in giving their best on the wet and mucky track. There were several spills.
Christ Church Girls set the tone with a one-two-three blitz.
Cheyanne Cummins took the lead from early and never relinquished it, powering home first in six minutes, 50 seconds.
She was followed home seven seconds later by schoolmate Charissa Moore, and Kiana Russell ensured the clean sweep sprinting home in seven minutes, 07 seconds.
The girls in green ended three points away from a perfect tally. They were so dominant that runners-up St Angela’s were 84 points behind. St Winifred’s ended third on 126.
Christ Church Girls took five of the top ten individual positions, placing first, second, third, fifth and seventh.
The positions of the five runners were added to determine the team’s points.
Among the boys, Milton Lynch dominated the first ten postions.
Kenneth Barker of Milton Lynch won in six minutes, 27 seconds, pipping Mateo Menal of NAPSAC champions St Stephen’s by one second. Jeremy Jemmot of St. Stephen’s took the third spot with a time of 6.31.
However, Milton Lynch’s first, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth positions saw them blasting the opposition in the team tally by 121 points.
Milton Lynch netted 271 points. St Stephen’s were second on 150, and perennial contenders Bayley’s Primary third on 153 points. (KB)
